The help on offer is a conversation. The problem is usually a situation.
Ask most people what exists for someone who is thinking about ending their life and they will name one thing: a phone number. That number saves lives, and we will always point to it. It was never designed to change the circumstances that bring someone to the edge.
Three things nobody offers together
- Somewhere to go. A supported stay away from the situation, when the situation is the problem.
- Someone who stays. One real person, before, during and for 90 days after.
- A plan with money behind it. The problem itself worked on: rent, work, debt, grief, health.
What exists today, and where it stops.
Crisis lines
Free, 24 hours, staffed by trained people, and many follow up afterwards. Built for the worst hour. They are not built to offer a place to go, or someone to sort out the rent.
Therapy and medication
Essential for many people, and ESCAPE will always work alongside clinical care, never instead of it. But a weekly hour cannot move someone out of a house they are not safe in.
Apps
Search the app store for suicide prevention and you find a handful of apps with almost no reviews. Peer-chat apps exist and help some people. None of them can offer a place to go.
Why not just a helpline?
A helpline is built for the moment, and does that well. It is not built to offer a place to go, or someone to sort out the rent. ESCAPE is the layer after the call, working alongside it.
Why not just a chat app?
Matched peer chat already exists, and an established helpline could build one quickly. Our app is not the product. It is the front door, and the thread that connects a person to a stay, a plan, and help at home.
Why not just a retreat?
A good two weeks fades if someone returns to the same isolation and the same unpaid bills. Every stay comes with a named person and a funded 90-day plan, or it does not happen.
Every story is different. The reasons fall into a few groups, and each one can be worked on.
This is the insight ESCAPE is built around. If the reasons are knowable, the help can be designed in advance and ready when someone arrives. Suicide never has one cause, and nothing here is a cure. These are starting points.
Heartbreak and betrayal
A partner who cheated, a marriage that ended, a love that was the whole plan.
What helps: distance, grief support, people around you, and in time help finding love again.
Losing someone
A parent, a child, a friend. Missing them so much that staying feels unbearable.
What helps: grief counseling, a group of people who understand, and a reason to get up tomorrow.
Losing everything
Debt, a business gone, a job gone, no way to pay next month.
What helps: debt counseling, benefits, emergency help, work, and the knowledge that the same money goes much further somewhere else.
A home you cannot stay in
Parents, a partner, a household that is crushing you, and nowhere else to go.
What helps: somewhere else to go, housing help, and support to leave safely.
Bullied or shut out
Online, at school, at work. Being made to feel there is no place for you.
What helps: a community that wants you, friends, support for who you are, and safe boundaries online.
Hating yourself
Your body, your weight, your face, your height, who you are.
What helps: kindness first, then real tools: a nutritionist, a workout partner, a doctor, people who like you as you are.
Addiction
A substance that has taken over, and shame about it.
What helps: clinical treatment through partners, a sober community, and the natural highs of movement, nature and purpose.
Depression and anxiety
Sometimes the illness is the depression or anxiety itself, with no single event behind it.
What helps: proper clinical care, which ESCAPE connects you to and works alongside. A change of place can make treatment easier to stick with.
These are the patterns we design for, not a formula. Every person gets an individual plan. Nothing here is a guarantee.
Most people who want to die do not want to die. They want the pain to stop, and they cannot see another exit.
ESCAPE is the other exit. A real one: an SOS button that gets you a person who gets it, and a reset button that gets you out and helps you start over.
Think of it as pressing restart rather than quit. Disappearing for a while is allowed. Leaving a city, a job, a family home, even a country can be done legally and safely with the right help. The future that looks impossible from inside the problem often looks different from a hillside two thousand miles away.

I kept noticing the same thing.
The help on offer was a conversation, and the problem was a situation. I have seen how fast a life can run out of options, and how different the same life looks from somewhere new, with people who care and a plan that actually touches the problem. ESCAPE is an attempt to build that, carefully, with people who know what they are doing.
ESCAPE will be run with clinicians and established partners. The founder's job is the vision, the partnerships and the money, not the clinical decisions.
